One of the oldest professions in human history and one of the indispensable professions for society with the important mission it has undertaken, midwifery has existed with humans. In order to draw attention to the importance of the midwifery profession as it is an indispensable profession for the future of society, April 21-28 is celebrated as Midwives Week in Turkey every year, and May 5 is celebrated as World Midwives Day in the world. Midwives, who serve in every corner of the country, in villages, in cities and often under difficult conditions, provide care services to mothers and babies before, during and after birth.
One of the oldest professions in the world, the midwifery profession was seen in the Assyrians, Chinese, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks and Hittites in ancient times. Midwifery was a profession in Turkey based on manners and experience passed from mother to daughter. In the 19th century, young women called ''little midwives'' who were trained with the master-apprentice method alongside midwives who had made a name for themselves in big cities like Istanbul and Izmir, carried out their midwifery duties.
Midwives who help a new living being come into the world have a respected place in society as they undertake tasks such as relieving the mother's pain of birth and ensuring that the baby and the family are reunited. The main problem in regions where maternal and infant mortality is high in the world is the insufficient number of midwives. Maternal and infant mortality rates are reduced by increasing the number of midwives. Lack of knowledge and experience before, during and after birth also cause deaths. In this respect, midwives undertake the protection of public health.
According to the World Health Organization, the title of midwife is given to an individual who, after gaining the right to enter midwifery education whose validity is accepted in the countries where it is applied, successfully completes this program and is granted (deferred) or legal permission to practice the profession of midwifery.
On this meaningful day, Fırat University Midwifery Student Community aimed to raise awareness on this issue by walking between Fırat University Main Entrance and Kültür Park.
